Encircled by the Shehy, Derrynasaggart and Boggeragh Mountains there
is miles of wonderful walking with stories to be told.

weekend will consist of three walks (sample below).
Friday
Arrive
Macroom.
8.00-9.00pm:
Introductory tour of Macroom. See where Art O’Leary
met his love Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill and where William
Penn once lived.
Saturday
9.00 - 4.00pm: The Paps hill walk
This twin-peaked mountain is dedicated to the Tuatha de Danaan Goddess,
Dana or Anu and is a focal point of Celtic spirituality. This is a lovely
climb with ascent from 200m to 694m. 6-7 miles.
Sunday
9.00 - 12.00pm: A low level walking tour of the post glacial oak forest
of the Gearagh near Macroom town with information on
its formation, special habitat characteristics and human story.

Catherine Ketch of Lee Valley Walking has been guiding walks in the
Macroom area for the past ten years. A trained local guide she has an
MA in Geography as well as a keen interest in local history and environment.

The Múscraí Gaeltacht village of Baile Bhúirne
(Ballyvourney) is nestled between St Gobnait’s wood and Cascade
Wood surrounded by the Derrynasaggart mountains.
A Bi-lingual (English and Irish speaking) area, Ballyvourney was home
to poet Sean Ó Riordáin and is a sister village to Cúil
Aodha (Coolea) home place of celebrated Irish composer Sean Ó
Riada.
This
unspoilt area continues to attracts musicians, singers and artists.
During the week you will explore the hills and valleys throughout
this region on the border between county Cork and Kerry.
Tuesday
Arrive in Baile Bhuirne. Check-in from 3pm.
6.00 to 7.00pm: Get your bearings with an introductory walk in and near
Baile Bhuirne village.
8pm Dinner at the Mills.
Wednesday
Breakfast from 8am.
9.30am: Depart for The Paps hill-walk.
Climb the twin hills known locally as the Paps of Dana or Dhá
Chích Danann just over Kerry border.
These characteristically shaped hills have an ancient spiritual significance
and association with the Tuath de Danaan.
8.00pm: Dinner at the Mills
Thursday
Breakfast from 8am.
9.30am: Walk part of Sli Gaeltacht Mhuscrai which in turn is part of
the O'Sullivan Beara Way which stretches from West Cork to Co Leitrim.
Walk in the footsteps of O'Suilleabhain Beara on a low level walk through
woodland, moorland and old roads with fabulous views of the Cork and
Kerry mountains and the countryside around Baile Bhuirne.
8.00pm: Dinner at the Mills
9.00pm:
Music in the bar with Peadar Ó Riada, Connie Ó Conaill
and Eibhlín de Paor
Friday
Depart morning. Check out by 11am.

9.30am: Depart for the Gougane Barra Horseshoe hill-walk.
Climb high above St Finbarr’s 7th century lake island hermitage
where the river Lee begins its journey. Enjoy panoramic views of the
Lee Valley, the mountain ranges of West Cork and Kerry and Bantry Bay.
8.00pm: Dinner at the Mills
Saturday
Breakfast from 8am.
9.30am: Walk through Baile Bhuirne's old oak woodlands with a visit
to St Gobnait's Shrine and burial place (low level walk). Half day.
8.00pm: Dinner at the Mills
Sunday
Breakfast from 8am.
9.30am: Join the Lee Valley Walking Group on their Sunday walk over
the Cork and Kerry mountains to the Roughty Valley followed by a visit
to Ireland's highest pub The Top of Coom.
8.00pm: Dinner at the Mills.
Monday
Breakfast from 8am.
9.30am: Depart for climb on Doughill in the Lost Valley a magical hidden
valley near Beal Atha an Ghaorthaidh in the Muscrai Gaeltacht. Half
day.

Tuesday
Depart by 11.00am. Don't forget to visit Macroom's open air Market if
it is on your way home!
